I have some random orientation sapphire windows, what is the easiest way to determine the planes of them?

You will be able to find the C-plane (optical axis) enough easy, if will look on flat crystal by using polarization microscope or polariscope. Of course, the optical axis must be to perpendicular to crystal flat in this case. For other situation have place only one way: X-ray methods.
